If you've been wanting to learn to sew patchwork quilts, this is the workshop for you!
In this three-part virtual workshop hosted via Zoom, instructor Diana Rogers will take students on a tour of beginner patchwork, the process of sewing small pieces of fabric together to make a larger composition, and then will cover the basics of assembling, machine quilting and finishing a small quilt!
Students will learn how to create and assemble a Ruby Star Society small log cabin style quilt including:
- Beginner-level patchwork basics
- How to assemble your fabric pieces (you must have machine sewing experience; see below)
- How to iron in quilting
- The specific cutting and assembly methods used in a simple quilt block
- Understanding quilting materials, including batting and binding.
- How to assemble a "quilt sandwich" and baste or prep it for quilting
- How to quilt on a standard home sewing machine using a walking foot
- How to attach the quilt binding by machine, to finish the edges of your quilt
This is a three-part workshop being held on the following dates:
Sunday 3/21 at 4pm-6:30pm EST
Thursday 3/25 at 6:30pm-7:30pm EST
Sunday 3/28 at 4pm-6:30pm EST
**There will be homework to complete between sessions!**
Skill Requirements
Please note this is not a learn-to-sew class. Students must have basic machine sewing knowledge and be comfortable using a sewing machine. If you're a total newbie, consider taking our our virtual Sewing 101 workshop first!
Materials + Tools Required

- For the quilt top: at least 1.5 yards quilting cotton total (in however many colors/ prints you'd like for your design!)
- For the quilt back: 1 yard quilting cotton
- 2 packs of double fold quilt binding
- 1 pack crib sized quilt batting
- Fabric scissors
- 1 spool of all-purpose sewing thread -- a natural/off-white color tends to blend well, but you could also opt for a contrasting color if you're feeling brave! Some opt to purchase a second spool in a color that matches the binding color.

- Rotary cutter and cutting mat
- Sewing machine -- please make sure your machine is in good working order before registering for this workshop :)
- Walking foot for your sewing machine

Meet Your Instructor
Diana Rodgers is a teaching artist living in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Since earning a BFA in apparel design from FIT, she has enjoyed a varied creative career including fashion designer, entrepreneur, and teacher. The ‘common thread’ among all these endeavors is sewing. Diana currently teaches weekly sewing classes to children and adults, covering everything from clothing to accessories to quilts. When not teaching, she creates sewn illustrations (or applique), inspired by all the things that make her feel nostalgic. You can check 'em out on Instagram @wonderthreads
